The Evolution of Project Management

By Emma Meakin

Project management techniques began to be formalized in the 1950s. Since then, there has been a dramatic evolution in the way project management is performed.

The global standardization of project management has been an important factor. This has led to the spread of ideas between countries and industries, and to the emergence of project management professionals. Accompanying this trend has been the increasing demand for formal training and accreditation.

The biggest driver of the evolution, however, has undoubtedly been advances in technology. Incredible automation, data-crunching power and specialist project management tools are now at everyone’s fingertips. This has helped to democratize project management and to enable its principles and techniques to be explored and developed by increasing numbers of people.
